What this is—and is not

This is a local sports-landscape analysis and evidence brief. It does not estimate how many sports injuries occur in Hull. No athlete injury survey, participation census or analysis of clinical records was conducted.

“Start first” reflects likely musculoskeletal fit, proximity and ease of reaching a decision-maker—not club quality. The directory was curated for outreach and is not a complete register of every sports organisation.

Local footprint

62.2% of the records are in Hull.

Twenty-eight of 45 records are in Hull and 17 are in the East Riding. The directory provides local reach without treating a club count as a measure of membership or participation volume.

Rugby is the largest group, but the landscape is much broader.

Adult activity reached a new high in the latest Active Lives release.

Sport England reports that 64.6% of adults in England completed at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity a week in the November 2024-25 release. This is a national figure used for context; it is not a Hull estimate.

Rehabilitation implications

Local injury education should reflect more than one sport.

The directory points to audiences with different exposure patterns. It does not prove which injuries are most common locally.

Contact sport

Acute injury triage, concussion removal from play, shoulder and knee rehabilitation, and criteria-based return to contact.

Running and endurance

Training-load changes, tendon and bone-stress warning signs, calf and hamstring capacity, and phased return to mileage.

Court, hockey and field sport

Ankle and knee control, repeated acceleration and deceleration, change of direction, landing and fatigue.

Aquatic, throwing and racquet sport

Shoulder, elbow and trunk capacity, gradual exposure to volume and speed, and technique-related demands.

Evidence-informed care

Return to sport is a progression, not a date.

The 2016 return-to-sport consensus describes return as a continuum. Injury-specific frameworks then identify relevant criteria: the PAASS ankle framework includes pain, impairments, athlete perception, sensorimotor control and sport or functional performance.

Hands-on treatment has a narrower role. Sports massage may help short-term flexibility or delayed-onset muscle soreness for some people, but a 2020 meta-analysis found no direct performance benefit. Progressive loading, conditioning and sport-specific preparation remain central.

What genuine local injury data would require

A future club survey should define its period, injury definition and exposure measure; use anonymous reporting; and publish response rates, denominators, missing data and privacy safeguards before making any local prevalence claim.
