Assessment first

Assessment before any ultrasound-guided shoulder injection.

The first task is to confirm the likely diagnosis and whether an injection could help. We review your symptoms, medicines, allergies, diabetes, infection risk, previous injections and relevant imaging before examining the shoulder. Booking a consultation does not guarantee that an injection will be recommended or performed.

When an injection is appropriate, ultrasound can identify the intended joint, bursa or tendon sheath and display the needle in real time. The medicine, target and technique depend on the diagnosis and your health; the expected benefit, uncertainty, alternatives and aftercare are discussed before consent.

The target must match the clinical diagnosis. Rotator-cuff changes on a scan do not automatically mean that a steroid injection is the best treatment. Treatment is connected to a practical rehabilitation plan rather than presented as a stand-alone cure.

A focused consultation

Possible shoulder targets and clinical decisions

Your pathway

Clear decisions at every stage.

01

Assess and screen

We confirm the likely shoulder diagnosis and review medicines, allergies, diabetes, infection risk and previous treatment.

02

Ultrasound check

The proposed target is examined and we confirm whether the scan findings support the planned procedure.

03

Consent and procedure

Benefits, limitations, alternatives and material risks are discussed before any agreed injection is performed using sterile technique.

04

Aftercare and rehabilitation

You receive activity advice, warning signs and a plan for exercise, review or onward referral.

Honest, evidence-informed care

Accuracy matters, but the diagnosis matters first.

Ultrasound guidance can help visualise the target and needle, particularly for small or deep structures. It does not make an unsuitable injection appropriate. Risks can include a temporary pain flare, bruising or bleeding, infection, skin or fat change, a temporary rise in blood glucose and medication-specific complications; individual risks are discussed before consent.

Common questions

Useful answers before you enquire.

Can I book an ultrasound-guided shoulder injection directly?

You can book a suitability consultation. A clinical assessment and appropriate screening must take place before any procedure is agreed.

Will an ultrasound scan be performed first?

Where ultrasound guidance is being considered, the target is assessed before the procedure. If another investigation is more appropriate, we will explain this.

Which medicine will be injected?

That depends on the diagnosis, the target and your medical history. The proposed medicine, expected benefit, alternatives and risks are explained before consent.

What happens after the injection?

You receive individual aftercare advice, warning signs and guidance on returning to exercise, work and rehabilitation.
