Assessment first

Understand the neck problem before treating it.

Neck pain can relate to joints, muscles, discs, nerves and the demands placed on the neck during work or daily activity. Headache, shoulder or arm symptoms may sometimes be associated.

We assess movement, strength and relevant neurological findings, then explain whether physiotherapy is appropriate or whether investigation or specialist review should come first.

A focused consultation

What we can assess

Your pathway

Clear decisions at every stage.

01

Listen

We establish how symptoms started and what activities they limit.

02

Examine

Movement, strength and relevant nerve findings are assessed.

03

Clarify

We explain the likely diagnosis and any features needing further investigation.

04

Progress

Treatment builds movement, strength and tolerance for work and daily activity.

Honest, evidence-informed care

Treatment matched to the presentation

Care may include education, activity advice and progressive exercise. Imaging is not automatic and is recommended when it is likely to answer a useful clinical question.

Common questions

Useful answers before you enquire.

Can neck pain cause arm symptoms?

Yes. Neck and nerve problems can contribute to arm pain, altered sensation or weakness and should be assessed carefully.

Will I need an X-ray or MRI?

Not routinely. The need for imaging depends on the history, examination and whether the result would change care.

Can posture be the only cause?

Neck pain is rarely explained by one posture alone. We consider movement, load, recovery, health and work demands together.
